This story takes place when Japan was at war.
One day, Noboku, an elementary student living in Hiroshima, saved a kitten who was being attacked by a crow and brought him home. Her parents were against the idea of keeping him, but they finally accepted him as part of the family and gave him the name Kuro. During the war, it was very hard to gather food for themselves and even harder for Kuro. Nevertheless, Nobuko and her family spent time together very happily every day.
However, the shadow of war grew bigger as it steadily made its way to Hiroshima...
